Tastes like almond. Isn't one.

The baru nut is the seed of the Dipteryx alata tree, which grows only in the Cerrado — the savanna covering two thirds of the Brazilian highlands. Botanically a legume, on the palate a nut: roasted, it tastes nutty, with hints of peanut and dark chocolate.

There are no baru plantations. The fruits are gathered by cooperatives beneath wild-growing trees after they have fallen to the ground. A tree that earns an income is not cut down — the harvest protects the stand.
